Much has been written about the power of “giving”.  Two movies that immediately come to mind that suggest this, the story of the young boy whose determination started the “Pay It Forward” movement, or the young girl with a terminal illness whose story created “The Ultimate Gift” movement.  Both stories reflect on the profound effect that giving has on each and every one of us.

Giving enriches our lives.  We can give in so many ways and the rewards back to us are incredible! 

In 1999 I joined a friend in visiting a convalescent hospital around the Christmas holidays.  He was dressed as Santa Claus and I joined his two other helpers dressed in festive holiday attire.  What a special day this was…not only for the many people we visited, but for ME!  It was at this moment that I realized the need in our community to share joy and assistance to those facing hardship or loneliness.  In future blogs, I will share how this one day influenced me to take the steps to create a non-profit organization to fill this need.

In business, everyone knows that making a profit is one of the fundamental goals.  However, no business succeeds without giving to others.  Those that show social responsibility and demonstrate that they care about their workers and the environment and in meeting the needs of their community as well as their customers will sustain when others fail.

As we approach the holidays, remember that giving will always give back to you.  Your “gift” may be monetary, time, knowledge, kindness, advice, attention, hope and much more.  But, what I know for sure, it will help you create abundance in your life!
